The Weeping Song | Nick Cave | Fingerstyle Solo Arrangement | Guitar Tab

🇬🇧 The Weeping Song: One of my alltime favorite songs by Nick Cave (along with Red Right Hand and Where The Wild Roses Grow). I’m so excited about the upcoming Wild God Tour since the last tour I had bought tickets for got postponed (2020) and then cancelled (2021) because of the pandemic. I recently (2024) revisited this Weeping Song solo guitar arrangement (originally from 2022) and revised it.

The vocals got their own stave now so it’s easier to sing along while picking. And the bass line and accompanying notes changed some. Because, you know, when you arrange a piece and play it for a while, your fingers will go ahead and try some new things at some point. I especially like the intense bass in the A minor chords now, which works a lot better with the dark mood of the song. It’s not part of Nick Cave’s composition, I just made it up for a more interesting solo guitar performance.

The Weeping Song lyrics

Go son, go down to the water
And see the women weeping there
Then go up into the mountains
The men, they are weeping too

Father, why are all the women weeping?
They are weeping for their men
Then why are all the men there weeping?
They are weeping back at them

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won’t be weeping long

Father, why are all the children weeping?
They are merely crying son
Oh, are they merely crying, father?
Yes, true weeping is yet… to come

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won’t be weeping long

Oh father, tell me are you weeping?
Your face seems wet to touch
Oh, then I’m so sorry, father
I never thought I hurt you so much

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While we rock ourselves to sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won’t be weeping long

Which album did The Weeping Song appear on?

The Weeping Song is a song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It appears on their 1990 album The Good Son. It released as a single in 1990 by Mute Records. If you need some background information on Nick Cave, this is what Wikipedia says: „Nicholas Edward Cave AO (born 22 September 1957) is an Australian singer, songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional actor. Known for his baritone voice and for fronting the rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Cave’s music is generally characterised by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences and lyrical obsessions with death, religion, love and violence.

Born and raised in rural Victoria, Cave studied art in Melbourne before fronting The Birthday Party, one of the city’s leading post-punk bands, in the late 1970s. They relocated to London in 1980. But, disillusioned by life there, evolved towards a darker, more challenging sound that helped inspire gothic rock. And acquired a reputation as „the most violent live band in the world“.

I strongly recommend to follow Nick Cave’s blog The Red Hand Files in which he answers fan questions in a very personal manner. I love to get the e-mail with the new blog post. Because it feels like Nick is writing to me as my personal friend.
