I will never forget the night I had booked Duncan Townsend for a birthday livingroom concert – and then came the Covid lockdown. Duncan showed up anyway, although he had to stay healthy to get on a plane to Australia the next day. Just about 15 guests dared to attend my party, we all took Corona tests and had the most magical evening together – amidst all the madness.
The reason why I chose to invite Duncan Townsend to play for my birthday was his song „Soulmate“. I must have watched the YouTube video a hundred times. That’s how much I loved this little lovesong – and still do. And guess what, Duncan played it twice for me and my guests that night! I couldn’t have been more grateful.
Choose between an easy beginners‘ version and the original chords
So this music sheet is long overdue. It contains a guitar tab with vocals and the picking pattern and two lead sheets – one with easy chords and another one with the original, more advanced chords. Duncan uses the capo on the 3rd fret, I don’t.

You’d be surprised how many famous songs were written by Duncan Townsend
Actually, after my livingroom concert I saw Duncan Townsend play a second time by chance. His show was the evening program of a work event. And although he played tons of energetic cover versions and created a great atmosphere within seconds, I like it so much more when he plays songs which he wrote himself. He wrote a lot of well-known songs for various artist! My second favorite is „Paper Planes“ (Madism), but you might also know „hurt u“ by Universal-artist Anna Grey or „Stay With Me“ from the Netflix series „Home For Christmas“, Season 2.
During the 20 years of his career, which includes a duet with Nena and a tour with Katie Melua, Duncan Townsend has – according to his website – „amassed over 500 million streams, contributed to seven #1 albums, been awarded multiple gold and platinum discs and his songs have found their way into several films, series and major advertising campaigns.“ Well, I am not surprised at all, because he is just a songwriting genius.
